The Sikh Principle in Action: Harpal Obhan’s Dedication to Giving Back

Harpal Obhan

Sikhism is a religious philosophy founded on principles of selflessness, community service, and equality. Followers, known as Sikhs—meaning ‘disciples’ or ‘learners’—embody these teachings in their daily lives.

At the core of Sikh beliefs is the idea of giving back to the community through acts of kindness and service. Sikhs strive to live honest lives, practicing selflessness and ensuring that all people are treated equally, regardless of their background or status. This devotion to equality and service makes Sikhism a truly compassionate faith that emphasizes respect and love for all humanity.

Harpal, guided by his Sikh faith, adheres to the principle of donating 10% of his earnings back to society. While he acknowledges not perfectly observing all of the Sikh tenets, he recognizes this commitment to giving as a core aspect of his religion. This philosophy also underpins his belief in the importance of community building.

“I believe that charity begins at home, and I do my best to contribute in any way I can. I often help those who work with us, sometimes very discreetly. I pay for their tuition and encourage them to go back to school. I don’t depend on the income from restaurants, as it’s only temporary. Thankfully, things tend to work out. I believe that God has been very gracious and kind to us. Maintaining this mentality isn’t solely a human effort. It must come from a higher power. This is my personal belief.” –Harpal Obhan

Each Thanksgiving, Harpal dedicates his time to “Let’s Share a Meal,” an organization that provides 13,000 meals to homeless shelters throughout the tri-state area. Beyond this annual tradition, Harpal actively supported hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic, supplying medicines, protective kits, vaccines, and meals for staff during those uncertain times.

Despite our personal beliefs, we could all learn from the Sikh community to uplift our communities and to truly make the world a better place.
